To grave dowse, use a dowsing rod, with a 90-degree bend at one end for a handle; hold a rod in each hand, with the bent part resting against the fleshy part of your hand beneath your little finger and near your wrist. Close your hand loosely to support the handle, pull your thumb away from the rod. Hold the rods parallel to one another and out in front of you-resting your upper arms and elbows against your body. Allow the rods time to steady, then begin to walk slowly forward, take baby steps toward where you suspect there is a grave.
As you come to a grave the rods will begin to move and for most people the rods will cross some people experience the rods go the opposite direction and point behind the dowser.
As you continue walking, the rods will return to the forward position. The rods will react in this way from any direction.
To determine whether the grave is an infant or an adult, count the steps you take as you cross over the grave. This will vary somewhat for each person, but short graves will require few steps and will be Infants; longer graves will, of course, require more steps and be adults or older children. As you dowse, this will become easier to determine. In addition, the earth can sometimes give up the edge of a grave because it has ever so slightly sunk down. Practice looking for these depressions.
To determine gender, use one rod and walk as you did before but with only one rod. The rod will move either to the right or left.
In my personal experience the rod moves toward the right for males and left for females.
To verify which it is for you, dowse a marked grave or two.
Another method that is used in determining gender is the pendulum. Suspend one rod over the grave supported by one or two fingers and allow the rod to swing free. The rod will go clockwise for a female and counter clock-wise for a male. This method takes a little time, so don't rush it.
Best of luck, Faye Elder
